Gaza’s Winter Floods: Families Facing Cold, Hardship, and Unimaginable Conditions

As winter settles over Gaza, the situation for displaced families has grown even more severe. Heavy rains have caused widespread flooding across areas already devastated by conflict. Tents and makeshift shelters—never meant to withstand harsh weather—have been soaked, collapsed, or washed away entirely. For many families, there is simply nowhere dry or warm to go.

The floods have not only damaged the little that people had left, but they have also added another layer of struggle to daily life. Parents are holding onto their children in freezing temperatures, trying to keep them warm with wet blankets and damp clothes. Basic items like boots, warm coats, and dry bedding have become luxuries many cannot find.

Families Waiting for Water in the Cold

Long queues for clean water have become routine. Families stand outside for hours in the cold rain, hoping to collect enough water for drinking and cooking. Children shiver in line next to their parents, often without proper winter clothing. The combination of conflict damage and winter flooding has pushed daily survival to frightening levels.

Shelters Cannot Protect Them

Most displaced people in Gaza rely on temporary tents or thin structures that provide little protection from wind and rain. Floodwater has seeped through floors, beds, and clothes. In some areas, people are sleeping in wet spaces because they have no alternatives. Cases of illness are rising as families struggle to stay warm in these harsh conditions.

The elderly and people with disabilities are among the most affected. With mobility challenges and weakened immunity, the cold can be especially dangerous. Many cannot stand in long water queues or move themselves to safer locations. They rely entirely on aid teams to reach them.

Children Are Suffering the Most

Winter is especially hard on children in Gaza. Many do not have warm jackets, dry shoes, or even clean blankets. The combination of hunger, cold, and fear has taken a heavy emotional and physical toll. Parents worry constantly about their children getting sick, yet they have few resources to protect them.
